Friendly customer information: Debits when refueling at fuel pumps abroad
Dear customer,
Many people abroad use the convenient option of refueling directly at the pump with a card. In doing so, it may happen that a higher amount than you actually pay for fuel appears to be “debited” or “reserved” from your account. We would like to explain how this works and why this happens—so that there is no cause for concern.
🔎 Why does a high amount appear on my account?
When you pay at a fuel dispenser, the system does not know how much fuel you will actually purchase before you fill up. That's why a so-called pre-authorization or reservation of an amount, e.g., $200 or another flat rate, is made first. This amount is “blocked” on your account or deducted from your available balance or credit limit, but it is not yet the actual payment amount.
👉 This procedure serves to ensure that your card is valid and that there are sufficient funds available for the refueling process – similar to a security check before the actual amount is determined.
⏱️ What happens after refueling?
Once the refueling process is complete, the gas station transmits the actual amount to your bank. The bank then only books the amount actually refueled.
The previously “reserved” amount is automatically released as soon as the correct amount is posted.
🕐 How long does it take for the reservation to be released?
That depends on your bank. In many cases, the reservation will be lifted within a few hours to approximately 2–5 business days and replaced by the actual amount. In some cases, it may take a little longer, especially on weekends, holidays, or at certain banks.

This is not a final debit, but a temporary reservation.
The reserved amount is not available to you until it is released (it reduces your available balance or credit).
The amount of the reservation is not determined by us, but by the bank or card provider.
